MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM HSBR!!

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.
~Dr Seuss

HOLIDAY PET SAFETY TIPS

Don't let the hustle and bustle and stress of the holidays get in the way of these basic pet safety tips from PetEducation.com.

Food - Related Items

Holiday foods we enjoy cooking and eating can be a problem for your pet.

Rich, fatty foods, like gravy or grease, can cause problems ranging from stomach upsets to pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas resulting in pain, vomiting, and dehydration. Dogs with this serious condition often require hospitalization for treatment.

Wine glass and chocolateAlcohol can cause serious intoxications in pets, and many dogs are attracted to it. Every year hundreds of dogs die after a single bout of alcohol consumption. Clean up glasses after holiday parties. Dogs are often attracted by the sweet taste of drinks, especially eggnog.

Chocolate, coffee, and tea all contain dangerous components called xanthines, which cause nervous system or urinary system damage and heart muscle stimulation. Chocolate, with theobromine, is especially a problem because dogs love its flavor. Problems from ingestion range from diarrhea to seizures and death. Unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the worst culprits, but all chocolate, fudge, and other candy should be placed out of your dog's reach.

Uncooked meat, fish, and poultry can contain disease-causing bacteria, such as E. coli, and parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii. These uncooked foods should not be given to your dog. For your own health, as well as your pet's, wash utensils that have been in contact with raw meat, and cook meat thoroughly.

Bones from fish, meat, or poultry can also cause problems if swallowed. Even small bones can splinter causing lacerations (tearing) throughout the intestinal tract. So, no matter how big or how little they are, be sure to keep bones (other than those that are specially sterilized and treated) away from your dog. Rawhides, Kong toys, and hardened, sterilized bones would be better alternatives.

Tobacco products can be fatal to pets, if ingested. Signs of poisoning develop within 15 to 45 minutes and include excitation, salivation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pets may develop seizures, collapse and die from cardiac arrest. Keep cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, nicotine gum and patches, and ashtrays out of the reach of pets. Empty ashtrays frequently since cigarette butts contain about 25% of the total nicotine in a cigarette.

Uncooked yeast dough can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Grapes and raisins contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys.

The artificial sweetner, xylitol, that is present in some gums, breath mints, candy, and other human food can be very toxic to dogs.

Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscles of dogs.

Remember, dogs have an exceptional sense of smell – juices on plastic or aluminum foil left on countertops are very tempting. If ingested, plastic or foil wrap (cellophane candy wrappers or food wrap) can cause choking or intestinal obstruction.

Meat-soaked strings from rump roasts are also enticing. Ingestion can cause a surgical emergency called a 'linear string foreign body' in the intestines.

To be safe, put away food immediately, and pet-proof your garbage. Garbage contains all kinds of other hazards for your dog such as plastic wrap and bags, 6-pack beverage holders that could cause strangulation, fat trimmings, bones, and pieces of ribbon or tinsel.

Feed your pet(s) before a party so they will not be so apt to beg or steal food.

Poisonous Plants

PoinsettiaWe all like making our homes more festive for the holidays. We enjoy the green foliage and colorful flowers of plants. Unfortunately, many of the plants we have in our homes during the holidays can be poisonous to pets. If ingested, holly (leaves and berries) causes stomach upset and can be potentially fatal to both dogs and cats. Mistletoe upsets stomachs and can cause heart collapse, while hibiscus may cause diarrhea. Poinsettias have an irritating sap that can cause blistering in the mouth and stomach upset. So when you brighten up your home, place these plants well out of your dog's reach, or use imitation holiday plants.

Decorations and Wrappings

All that glitters is not gold – it could be dangerous for your pet.

Ribbons, yarn, and string can cause intestinal obstruction and bunching of the intestine along the length of the string. These conditions require surgery and can be fatal. Ribbons around your dog's neck may be cute, but they can also be dangerous.

Adhesives and glues can be toxic and are often attractive to animals.

CandlesPotpourri contains oils that can be toxic to dogs if eaten. We may not think of eating it, but some curious pets may.

Candles can cause burns and fires. Never leave lighted candles unattended or within reach of your pet.

Few things are more tempting to a playful dog than a game of tug. This is not a good game, however, to play with the end of a tablecloth. Try to keep items such as tablecloths, table runners, etc., from hanging too low to the floor, and tempting happy dogs running by to grab an end and pull!

Gifts Under the Tree

Rawhide or other edible items left under the tree can be very tempting, and remember that companies (even Drs. Foster & Smith!) often package rawhide or other pet gifts wrapped in ribbon. Make sure to remove ribbons or ties before you present gifts to your dog. If played with and swallowed, yarn, ribbon, or string on gifts can cause intestinal obstruction, requiring surgery.

Perfume bottlesPerfumes and after-shaves contain ethanol (alcohol) and perfume also contains essential oils which can be very toxic to dogs if ingested.

Batteries for toys or other gifts can be toxic and cause intestinal obstruction. Keep in a safe place until they are ready to be inserted in the gift.

Christmas Trees

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how careful we must be. Christmas trees and their decorations can create hazards for pets.

Place Christmas trees in a stable stand, and attach the tree securely to a window or wall with something like fish line. We have known others who have hung their tree from the ceiling! To keep pets away from the tree, it may help to use a Scat Mat. While most dog owners use an indoor exercise pen to provide a safe place for a pet to play, during the holidays, some people place the pen around the tree. Even though you take precautions, make sure your dog is always supervised when in a room with a tree.

Tree needles can be toxic and cause mouth and stomach irritation. Even needles and the wire of artificial trees could pose a problem. Be sure your dog is not chewing on branches or eating fallen needles.

Tinsel's shininess is attractive. When eaten, it can cause blockages, which often require surgery to remove. Leave it off the tree altogether.

Angel hair, flocking, and artificial snow are mildly toxic. If consumed in larger amounts, however, they could cause blockage of the intestine. Try decorating with something less likely to cause a problem.

Electric cord and glass ornamentChewing on electrical cords, including cords of lights can cause problems ranging from burned mouths, to electrical shock to death by electrocution. Some larger lights can become quite hot, and could also cause burns. Unplug decorative lights when you are not there, use pet-proof extension cords, and spray cords with a product such as Bitter Apple or Chew Stop.

Dogs will often play with glass ornaments as if they were balls and serious oral lacerations can result. Sharp ornament hooks can also become imbedded in your pet's mouth or esophagus. Place ornaments that are shiny, or could be swallowed or broken high up on your tree. Larger, less intriguing ornaments can go near the bottom.

Decorating trees with food is asking for problems. Candy canes and gingerbread people can be as enticing to your dog as they are to children. We know of one diabetic dog who ran into some problems with regulating her disease because she was stealing candy canes off of the tree. Popcorn, raisin, or cranberry garlands are beautiful, but can cause an obstruction when eaten, requiring surgery.

Because tree preservatives are often sugar-based (and inviting to dogs) and because the water stands so long, the water in the tree stand often harbors potentially harmful bacteria. Fertilizers, insecticides, or flame retardants that were used on the tree may also get into the water. Cover the stand with a tree skirt or use other means to prevent access to the water.

Visitors

Some pets love visitors and behave very well. Others may be fearful or aggressive. Some puppies may urinate when meeting people. Still, others may be too full of holiday cheer and over-exuberant. Plan for how your dog will react to visitors.

A quiet room, away from the commotion with water and food available will help fearful dogs be more comfortable.

Brushing up on obedience training before the holidays may help a dog who has become a little rusty. Be sure to inform your visitors of any household 'rules' or problem behaviors concerning your pets, e.g., sneaking out the door, jumping up on the couch, getting food from the table, etc.

For dogs who may not behave or could be aggressive, placing them in a separate room, using pet gates, or having them stay at a friend's house during a party, may be necessary. Sometimes, boarding a dog in a kennel may be the safest alternative.

Cleaning products such as disinfectants get a lot of use during the holidays as we spiff up our homes for visitors. Remember, many of these products can be toxic to your pets.

When inviting visitors, make sure they know you have a pet. If these people have allergies, you could help them by using a product such as Allerpet to decrease the dander in the house.

If you are traveling during the holidays, and need to leave your pet(s) at home, start to make accommodations for your pet(s) early. Many boarding facilities fill up very fast. Responsible pet sitters are a good alternative. If they are unfamiliar with your house or pet(s) have them come over and get acquainted before you leave.

New Pets

New pets are not good holiday gifts. If someone is thinking about getting a new pet, give the new prospective owner a variety of dog toys, food, or books on dog care. You may also wish to give a gift certificate so the person can choose his or her own pet after the holidays.

Similarly, if thinking about getting a new pet for yourself, remember pets need routine and a time to bond with you. With its noise, commotion, and special hazards, the holiday season is anything but routine. Think about getting your new dog after the holidays. We guarantee you will not have an after-holiday let down!

Why not make the holidays more enjoyable for homeless pets? Contact your local animal shelter to see if you can donate food, kitty litter, toys, or time.

Pet Gifts and Treats

Spending quality time with your favorite companion during the holidays will help keep your pet calmWhen choosing a holiday gift for your special friend, be sure it is safe – no small pieces that could come off and be swallowed. Choose healthy holiday treats for your dog and give them in moderation.

With all of the festivities, do not forget to relax and spend some quality time with your pet. Your dog will think that is the best gift of all.

You might be wondering to yourself, Who is too cute for words?

Star needs a fur-ever home for the holidays!!

Star is a spunky 4-year-old who will truly shine in a home where she can be a cherished only dog.

Star grew up in a busy household that included several other dogs. While she got along with them well enough, she definitely prefers human company. Star can be a diva around other female dogs, and she has a tendency to chase cats and smaller dogs. But she craves human attention and affection--so bring it on!

Star has lots of energy for play. Too much, in fact, for very small children or senior citizens. A doggie manners class would be a great idea for this gung-ho gal. Leash walks and games that use mental energy would also be good for her. Stars new family will have to make sure she doesnt over-exert herself, especially in the summer months, because she will overheat quickly. Star likes toys, but you will have to offer her a treat when you want her to give one up.

Star will need to be supervised when she is free in the house until she establishes a housebreaking routine but she is VERY smart and since she is crate-trained, she will get housetraining easily. She wont have an accident if you crate her when you go out, or overnight,. She is not destructive at home, and wont chew anything that she shouldnt.

Star loves going places and meeting new people. Contact us if you would like to meet her.

Star is spayed and up to date for vaccines. NO DOGS, NO CATS

Star's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Star or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website. For an application, please visit our Bulldog Adoption Online Application.

Let's find Belle a Fur-ever home for the holidays!!

Belle no longer loves other dogs! Now that she's feeling better, she wants to rule the roost, so we're changing our search and looking for a home without other dogs where Belle can be queen of her castle!

UPDATE: Belle is doing SO well that she's ready for her FURever home! Belle has made great improvement in her foster home - she can now go in and out of the dog door on her own and walk around the yard just fine! She's put on some much-needed poundage and has really come back to life with some quality food and lots of love from her foster family.

Belle would like a FURever home where she can wander in the yard. Belle's been back to the neurologist and has gotten the OK to move on to her new life! Belle is a complete joy and wants to bring her "joie de vivre" and extreme joy into your life, too!

Belle's Previous Description:

Belle, or Grizabella, has been re-named for Grizabella from the musical CATS. In the original show, Grizabella was the glamour cat "chosen to be reborn." Just like Grizabella, Belle is being given a new chance at life.

Belle was removed from a home where she was being severely abused by a disturbed teenager and her parents, too. Belle is currently 15-20 pounds under weight, too, because she wasn't being fed properly. She was also dehydrated and in serious need of medical care. She had several broken bones that were not set or treated.

DESPITE HER TROUBLED PAST, Belle is sweet as pie. She has some neurological issues which give her trouble walking, but she's seeing a neurologist and is scheduled for an MRI soon. She CAN walk, but falls down a lot. We are going to do our best for her to give her some quality of life.

Belle is ALL HEART and is looking to adopt a person who has a huge heart as well.

Will you give Belle her foster or forever home?

Mia - still searching for her FUR-ever home!

Mia would love to have a fenced yard where she can run and play, and sunshine- filled rooms to snooze in. She is a healthy, energetic 5-year-old bulldog who rarely barks, isnt destructive, and is perfectly house-trained. In new situations she can be apprehensive, but warms up quickly. She will sit nicely and give her paw for a treat.

In her previous home, Mia spent a lot of time alone in a basement, after her owner moved in with a relative who didnt care for dogs. That was no fun for a gal who likes people and enjoys being outside.

Mia needs a family that will be patient the first week or two as she gets to know them. She would rather not be crated. You can gate her in a room where she can see you when necessary, but she would rather be right by your side, wherever you are.

Mia's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Mia or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website. For an application, please visit our Bulldog Adoption Online Application.

Nellie Needs a FUR-EVER Home!

Nickname: Nell

Expected Adult Size:
medium and she's already there, although she still needs to gain some weight.

Arrival Story: Nellie was turned into a shelter and the nice people there contacted HeavenSent to help her find a home.

Bio:
Nellie loves kids and people but is NOT good with other dogs. She is VERY, very sweet and about 6 or 7 years old. Nellie didn't get enough food, so she still gets really excited about eating.

Nellie came to us with severe ear and eye infections and while she's on her way to recovery, she needs someone who will be vigilant about giving her meds.

Nellie would prefer a home with little or no stairs. She can get up and down but would rather not. A yard would be great as she's not a long walker she'd benefit from being able to just step out back to do her business.

Aside from the meds, Nellie is low maintenance. She likes to just hang out wherever the people are. Nellie's happy to lie on the floor and chill as long as she's with you. She's pretty low key.

Sun Sign: VIRGO

Likes: treats, roaming the fenced yard, hanging with the peeps

Pet-Peeves:
Stairs and houses without air conditioning.

Motto: Barke Diem

Nell's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Nell or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website. For an application, please visit our Bulldog Adoption Online Application.

Belle needs a home!! Please spread the word!!

Belle's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Belle or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website. For an application, please visit our Bulldog Adoption Online Application.

Feel free to email us to let us know if you're interested in a specific dog AFTER you have completed an application at hsrescue@aol.com PLEASE try to be patient. If you are a good match for a bulldog, we WILL be in touch. It might be soon, or it might be a few weeks. We appreciate your cooperation!!

The Foster Family - by Pam Scherzer

Fostering IS the greatest NEED, and greatest ASSET, contributing the most to a smooth transition and continually proves to be responsible for the greatest percentage of successful, permanent re-homing of adoptable dogs.

Fostering is NOT an opportunity to “test” yourself, your family, or your existing pets as to how well you will co-exist with another bulldog in your household. You cannot judge an interaction with a traumatized dog and use it as a basis for your decision as to whether you should or should not add another dog to your household.

Dogs entering into a rescue program are being re-homed for any number of reasons. For some of these displaced dogs, we have up-to-date health and behavior histories, and very truthful backgrounds provided by families who are reluctantly surrendering a” family member”, wanting only the very best for them. The circumstances vary and are generally heartbreaking. In general, we can confidently place these dogs quickly into approved adoptive homes.

In direct contrast, a greater percentage of dogs coming into rescue have either been strayed, surrendered to shelters with no histories, or surrendered by families who want only to “get rid of” the dog for their own selfish and loveless reasons. It is these circumstances that present the dogs who need our careful assessment before they can be appropriately re-homed. Why? Aside from the obvious lack of information (not provided by shelter and strayed dogs), many surrendering families lie to us. They will purposely NOT disclose a temperament issue, or they may lie and say the dog HAS been aggressive if they think we will be sympathetic and act more quickly in their behalf. It is for these reasons primarily that a fostering arrangement is so important. It is an opportunity to interact with this dog and to learn the truth about him or her.

The Most Common Reasons for an Owner/Family to Surrender are:
1) Behavior issues they cannot or will not learn to manage.
2) The arrival of a human child, displacing their spoiled bulldog to the role of “pet”, something they expected the dog to understand.
3) The reality that a Bulldog really IS more high-maintenance than any other breed they have known.
4) Health issues, especially skin and allergy problems and sadly, those related to age.

The Foster Family's Responsibilities.
Your assessment of this dog is the most critical responsibility. You will be expected to carefully introduce him to normal daily life experiences ( i.e. leash walking , playing with toys, interacting with new people, manners, housebreaking habits, fears, aggression, food issues, reactions to unexpected noises and new things). You will not be responsible for housebreaking or training, but anything you can do to help will be appreciated. If the dog is on a normal dog food diet, you will be asked to provide that if we don’t have abundance. If the dog needs a vet visit (to OUR vet) you may be asked to go for that appointment if it is possible. Vet appointments, medication, and special foods are paid for by Heavensent Rescue. They are NOT your financial responsibility. If you chose to lavish your foster with new toys or beds or treats, that is your choice.

Your Opinion Matters
Whenever possible, we encourage the foster family to meet the approved adoptive family so that information about the dog and his or her habits can be passed along. You are the ones who have gotten to know him, and you will know the many little things that will make his transition easy. You are not required to participate if this meeting would be too emotional for you. We find, however, that is most cases it provides a sense of satisfaction for the foster family, or at least for the primary care giver. You have been an important part of somebody’s life and you deserve to see and to know that everything will be ok.

The Commitment to Foster:
1.Will you get attached?
Yes.

2. Will you feel like you want to keep the dog?
Probably.

3. For how long is a dog fostered?
Days, weeks, even months. It all depends on the needs of the dog and our ability to find the appropriate permanent home.

4. CAN you keep the dog?
Not if it has been matched to an approved family.

5. Will this dog feel like I am another person abandoning him or her?
No way!! While this dog has been living with you, whether it has been days, weeks or months, it has learned many things. He or she has heard his name used with kindness, and he has learned to be a part of a family. He has learned confidence and has come to expect each day of his life to be better than the day before. Dogs live “in the moment”.

6. So then what happens?
The day your foster goes to his or her forever home, YOU will be the one crying, and a new family will be the ones who are happy and excited. Your foster dog won’t be thinking of you or missing you, but will be thinking. “WOW ….how much better does it GET?” That night you will swear that you will never foster another dog. Within a day or two, you’ll want to know how your foster is doing, and you’ll let us know that you’d consider fostering again. And suddenly, you’ll be anxious to do it again. Although it’s hard to believe, those separations become easier with time. Your heart will swell with pride and satisfaction for the lives you’ve saved and the families you’ve helped to complete.

Nellie is new to rescue - let's get her a FURever home!

Can you provide the loving home Lucy deserves?

Hi, my name is Lucy and I am a healthy, laid back 5 year old girl who is looking for my FURever home. My past owners did not treat me very well. I was handled and discipline too hard; so I am afraid of men.

My foster mom has been working with me to gain trust with men again. It will take some time, but if you can work with me on confidence building exercises I can be rehabilitated. I need someone who understands my past and is willing to open their heart and help work with me so I can show them I'm full of love and affection.

I like other dogs, cats, and kids, and enjoy playing with my toys. My foster mom says, I need to lose 8-10lbs, because it does not get easier to lose this weight as I get older. I'm on a diet and started my walking program.

Lucy's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Lucy or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website. For an application, please visit our Bulldog Adoption Online Application.

Do you have room in your heart and your home for Killian?

My name is Killian and I am a happy healthy 2 year old boy who is looking for my FURever home. My past owners did not treat me very well. They did not pay much attention to the most important Bully NO NO: "I CAN"T SURVIVE IN THE HEAT!" I almost died from the heat and if I hadn't had such good medical treatment, I would have!!

Luckily I was surrendered to rescue and now I am spending my summer where I belong, in the air conditioning. I am a true indoors kind of guy, I love to sleep right up against the air conditioning vent. If I block the air for you, well sorry... but I'm worth it!

I am your stereotypical couch potato bully! I like other dogs but need to be with a calm dog cause I should not get too worked up - I overheat easily. I am good with pretty much everything but am a strong little guy so may be too playful for kids.. If you are looking for someone to sleep on the couch and watch TV, I am your guy!!!

Killian is housetrained and a total joy.

Killian's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area.
