Do You Have Room in Your Heart for Lola?

Nicknames: Just Lola. L-O-L-A, Lola! She thinks her name is just perfect.

Arrival Story: Lola was surrendered by a family that was no longer able to care for her.

Bio: Lola is a 2 year old young girl who is perfectly house trained. She is very nervous in new situations but does warm up quickly. She is best suited in a quiet, low-key household with no small children and no other dogs. She likes cats.

The perfect forever home for her would be a couple that enjoys long walks, car rides and giving her all kinds of undivided attention. She loves her toys, likes to play fetch and will also enjoy some down time on the sofa with a little cuddling afterwards.

Lola will greet you when you come home every day positioned for a belly rub. She is crate trained but it is not necessary. She LOVES her bed and will stay anywhere her bed is. She can go up and down steps but inside the house seems to pick a level and make it her own. She goes outside and does her business and comes back inside. Not sure if it is just the weather but has no interest in hanging around outside too long. A fence would be easy for the owner but she could easily be a leash dog, too.

Lola will only be placed in a home where they are committed to her training in the future.

Lola is up to date with vaccines and spayed and wants to know if you are the one to be her forever family?

Lola will not be placed in a home with children under 16.

Sun Sign: ARIES

Likes: long walks, car rides and to be cuddled, loved and made to feel safe and secure

Pet-Peeves: loud noises and busy households

Favorite Toy: Nylabones. Lola is a tough chewer and shreds plush toys. She can shred a tennis ball in 10 seconds flat - not a good toy for her. Make it a kong!

Favorite Walk: Any, as long as it's a LONG one. Also ADORES car rides!!

Motto: Barke Diem

Lola's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Lola, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

"Bulldog Rescue from Heaven" By Kevin Callahan

Amy Stein of Swedesbro with Cooper at BullyFest at the Holly Creek Kennel in Marlton.(Photo by Kevin Callahan)

On a recent fall Sunday, everyone was happy at Octo-Bull-Fest: The Eagles were winning and the bulldog show was going just fine.

Amy Stein of Swedesboro
wore an Eagles jacket on this
sunny day with just a touch of fall chill in the air. Stein was not worrying about the Eagles score.

“I had a ticket to the Eagles,” Stein said, “But my husband (Frank) took a friend so I could be here.”

Stein is a volunteer for HeavenSent Bulldog Rescue, which is a volunteer group of bulldog enthusiasts whose mission is to re-home bulldogs who are surrendered by their owners or find themselves otherwise without homes.

Often, these dogs land in animal shelters or wander the streets as strays.

On this Sunday, HeavenSent sponsored a dog show in Marlton at Holly Creek Kennels to help raise money for surrendered bulldogs.

“This is worth it,” Stein said about passing on the Eagles win, “It is for charity.”

“I look forward to these events,” volunteer and Gibbstown resident Eileen Moore said. “You meet a lot of bulldog owners.”

It was also refreshing to be outdoors.

“The fall weather is so beautiful to be outside,” Kara Gordon, who runs the event, said. “The bulldogs like the weather and so do we.”

More than 200 people showed up to spend time with the dogs and enjoy the weather.

Marcello Guzman and Claudio Catellanos drove three hours from Fairfax, Va., to attend the event with Big Red, their 63-pound 2-year-old bulldog.

“You get to meet friends and I wanted to show my big boy,” Guzman said.

This was Big Red’s first show. He took a third-place ribbon in the adult category.

“We enjoy the bulldogs and we enjoy the activity with the other owners,” Catellanos said.

Volunteers like Gordon provide foster homes, veterinary care and rehabilitation for these needy dogs. Their ultimate goal is to finding them “forever homes,” or matching them with permanent owners.

While HeavenSent places rescued bulldogs primarily with families in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, bulldogs from the surrounding areas are rescued as well.

In 2007, HeavenSent rescued and found forever homes for more than 70 bulldogs.

Annise McManus of Palmyra and her stepdaughter, Chelsea, wore bulldog T-shirts in addition to showing off 2-year-old Huey.

Chelsea, 13, is learning to be a bulldog handler at shows. She already knows how to handle boxers.

“Everyone loves Huey,” Chelsea said. “Who doesn’t love Huey?”

ZuZu really loves Huey. The 1-year-old bulldog met Huey in the spring when her owner, Liz Buer of Cherry Hill, brought her to BullyFest, which is the springtime bulldog show.

“It is fun to enjoy the nice weather before winter,” Buer, 24, said while explaining her reasons for attending the shows.

Kara Gordon, who wore a “Don’t Stop Bul-lieving” T-shirt, runs the event. Her husband, Barry, helps.

They started the BullyFest five years ago, and Octo-Bull-Fest was their first fall event. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the rain pushed it to Sunday — the same time the Eagles played the Falcons.

“I was worried about the Eagles,” Kara said.

She is more worried about the dogs, though.

HeavenSent is not a shelter facility. Foster care for bulldogs in transition is provided in the private homes of HeavenSent’s volunteers, who receive no compensation for their time.

Many volunteers spend their own money to provide toys, treats, food, beds and grooming for the dogs.

“We just love the dog (breed) and they really need help,” Kara, a lawyer, said. “They are so popular that people keep getting them but don’t take care of them.”

Elisabeth Cleveland of Medford walked her 4-year-old male dog, Regan, at the show.

“It is nice, it is fun for all the bulldogs,” Cleveland, the owner of Mobile Dog Groomer, said. “It is good for the dogs to socialize with all the other dogs.”

Terry Starzinski of Shamong brought her 6-month old female, Lulu.

“She is a real Georgia bulldog, born and bred,” Starzinski said.

Many of the dog owners communicate on the Internet.

“We all talk to each other on Web sites and Facebook,” Brian Binkley, 33, of Pine Hill, said while holding his 3-year-old Butch. “So, we all want to see each other.”

And, despite not seeing the Eagles, they still knew what was happening at the Eagles game.

“They are on the 3-yard line,” Max Gordon told his dad, Barry, late in the show.

“This was a good success,” Kara said, “The weather was so nice. I think we will do it every fall.”

Winnie is still looking for a new home!

UPDATE: Winnie is a fantastic girl, and her foster family fall more in love with her every day!! Trouble is, she doesn't do stairs really well, and has to be carried up and down every day, which she really doesn't like much. Winnie would love a home where she could use the necessary outdoor area without a lot of steps and she'll give you nothing but love, wiggles, hugs and kisses in return! Can YOU give Winnie her forever home??

WINNIE is a beautiful senior who is down on her luck. At 9+ years of age (she'll be 10 in August), WINNIE finds herself with nowhere to live. WINNIE's parents got divorced and now she stays with her grandmother temporarily. She occasionally has an ear infection which the vet said is allergies. She has a lot of energy and plays and wiggles like a puppy. She doesn't like to regularly walk on a leash. She is housebroken and was crated as puppy. She is not good with other dogs, meaning she needs to be an only dog. We realize this is a tall order for an older gal, but we're hoping someone will open their heart to give Winnie a home during her golden years!

Winnie's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Winnie, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

Great Gift Idea - Big Doggy Bling!

Handmade Doggie Fashion - 20% of every sale goes to Heavensent Bulldog Rescue!
A martingale collar is a "limited slip" collar that is especially useful for dogs whose neck and head are about the same width, like Bulldogs and Greyhounds. However, they are great for all breeds & dogs of all sizes. A dog pulling backwards will not pull out of the collar because it is self adjusting, yet it doesn't have to be worn tight like a regular buckle or snap collar. At the same time, they are much more gentle and comfortable than "choke" collars.

Meet Meatball!

Nickname: Meaty

Size: A compact 59 lbs - bulldog picture perfect.

Arrival Story: Meatball’s family has new babies—yes, more than one—and they do not have the time or financial ability to treat Meatball’s skin and ear issues.

Bio: Meatball is a gentle, mellow boy who deserves all the love you have to give. We’re not sure of his age ...He is sweet and dignified. He is neutered, housebroken and up to date with vaccines. He has lived with other dogs and children. We don’t know how he would be with cats but we suspect he'd be as gentle with them as he is with everyone else.

Needs: Meatball has limited hearing because his ear canals are nearly closed, a complication of his allergies. We are treating him with oral medications, eye and ear drops, and medicated baths.

Meatball is cooperative with his daily treatments. We would love to see him in a quiet home as an only dog, or with another calm dog for companionship. Meatball doesn’t require much exercise....just lots of love, and a family committed to continuing his allergy treatments.

Likes: Being petted and fussed over. Treats of any kind. A comfortable place to snooze. He is happiest when he is right by your side.

Pet-Peeves: We haven’t found any! Meatball is very agreeable.

Meatballs's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Meatball, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

Kiaya Needs A Home!

Nicknames: Kiaya is pronounced KIE-uh. Her nickname is Kiki (like tie-tie.)

Expected Adult Size: She's reached it, and she's perfect.

Arrival Story: Kiaya has a heart of GOLD and is one of the sweetest bullies we've ever met, even with all she's endured! Kiaya was a puppy mill mama and according to the miller who sold her, had four litters before she stopped producing large enough litters, and he sold her for $150 to someone. That person kept her for a year, and then gave her to someone else, who kept her for a year and surrendered her to us today. They simply couldn't afford basic maintenance in veterinary care - like a lot of people they are being hit hard by the economy - and Kiaya had a cherry eye that we've treated - we're clearing up an ear infection. Kiaya may always need eye drops for dry eye, but she's very good about taking them.

Bio: Kiaya is house-trained, spayed & sweet as pie! She is about 5 years old and is very affectionate and lovable. Her little tail goes a mile a minute when you walk in the room - she's really happy and loves to see people. Kiaya might even be a good therapy dog!!

Kiaya's family said that she's been a little snarky with female dogs in the past, but so far in her foster home, she's been just fine. Sun Sign: GEMINI

Quick AutoBiography: I'd like to find my FUR-ever home!! You won't regret it for a day if you let me become part of your family. I'm very pleasant and easy-going, too! My foster dad says my name should be SUGAR because I'm so easy and super SWEET.

Likes: snoozing on the couch, treats, DINNER

Favorite Toy: Doesn't really play with toys, like many dogs used just for breeding, but occasionally likes to nose a ball around. She loves to chew on nylabones, though!

Favorite Walk: To the CAR to take me for a ride! Only problem is that she doesn't want to get OUT of the car!

Kiaya's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Kiaya, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

Meet Tippy!

This beautiful senior female is in search of a new and forever home. She is playful & sweet, loving & affectionate. You'd never know she was a senior - in excellent health.

She enjoys everything except female dogs! She has been happy with most male dogs, but she'd be just as happy as an only dog. That would be our preference, in fact, but we'd he happy to let her meet your fella !

Tippy is easy going, low maintenance - and she's gorgeous, too!! She's a sweet girl who is as happy to spend the whole day sleeping while she waits for you or hanging out right beside you watching TV, running errands .... anything goes !!! She just wants to love you ! Can you give Tippy her retirement home?

Tippy is a little camera shy. Her photos are never great because she doesn't like to look at the camera. We have a lot of GREAT pictures of her sleeping !!!! Please enjoy a little clip of "Tippy Live !"

Bubba is Back in Rescue, Can You Help Him Find a Forever Home?

Bubba is having some issues in his new home and will be coming back into rescue. Bubba needs an experienced family who can help him learn not to be dominant, so that he can be successful in a FOREVER home. Bubba tries to be the boss and he needs someone who knows how to work with him. Is it YOU?
__________

Nicknames: Bubs, Bubbles, just Bubba, although we should call him Prince Charming because he'll charm the socks off of you!

Expected Adult Size: Full-grown and well-built! On the small side.

Arrival Story: Bubba was is a red and white snuggle-bear found as a stray by a shelter and eventually surrendered to HeavenSent for placement.

Bio: Bubba is a true delight. He is housebroken, very playful, neutered & young! He is only 18 months old and is very puppy-like in his behavior, but well-mannered and easily correctable all the same. Bubba will not be placed with other dogs although he doesn't mind cats at all. Bubba does very well with other dogs outside the home, on walks or just hanging around with a neighbor's dog, but he becomes dog-aggressive inside. We think he may have been forced into a situation with an aggressive dog who hurt or intimidated him.

Sun Sign: AQUARIUS

Quick Auto-Bio: WILL YOU LOVE ME FOREVER?!

Likes: Treats, car rides, walks, playing, zoomies in the yard. Belly rubs are his all time favorite and nothing makes him happier than walks to ANYWHERE. He likes his people and did very well chilling out under the table of the diner his foster mom took him to (they sat outside).

Special Help Needed!! Can You Help?

Sophia was born January 2008 and surrendered to rescue by her breeder in April.

Very early on in Sophia's life her disabilities began. Her mother took this sweet angel's head in her mouth and when the breeder tried to get her head out, Sophia ended up with head trauma that cause serious neurological damage. At the recommendation of the vet she started steroid shots, consisting of a series of three shots over her first few weeks.

HSBR took Sophia to the University of Pennsylvania for further testing and they have recommended that an MRI be done along with further testing at a later date. Sophia was unable to walk, run or play like a normal puppy but with the love and care of her foster mom and many hours of physical therapy, Sophia is making progress and learning to walk, run and play. Although she doesn't have the balance of a normal dog and does fall when trying to walk, she is totally unaware of her disabilities and picks herself up again and starts over with utter determination.

More recently, Sophia got very sick and was back at the vet's office again. After extensive testing it was discovered that Sophia was a condition called Congenital Megaesophagus. This is a condition where her esophagus becomes paralyzed and enlarged and is unable to propel food into her stomach. Because of this condition it is extremely important that Sophia eat in an upright position and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after each feeding, otherwise she could suffer fatal aspiration pneumonia due to inhaling food.

Sophia will remain under our wing with continued and extensive vet expenses to give this little angel a chance to lead as much of a normal life as possible. With the dedication, love and devotion of her foster mom Sophia is doing well today, but we need your help to continue her success.

Won't you consider reaching out and helping Sophia?

Natasha is available for adoption!

Nicknames: Tasha, Nat.

Expected Adult Size: Short and sweet!

Arrival Story: Natasha was surrendered to the veterinary hospital that treated her for vomiting.

After extensive diagnostic testing, the family could no longer afford her veterinary bills. The hospital fell in love with Natasha and continued to treat her, eventually undertaking an exploratory surgery and removing several rope toys that were lodged in her stomach. They also did an expensive palate surgery to help Natasha breathe beautifully. After they got her all fixed up, the vet who'd been caring for her contacted rescue so that we could find her a wonderful forever home.

Bio: Natasha is housetrained, spayed & sweet as pie! She is 4 years old and very playful and loving. We are limited her adoption to homes with older children because Natasha gets revved up by little ones and loud noises - she also likes to be the center of attention and would prefer to be the only dog.

Dexter is looking for a good home!

Nicknames: Dex, Dexie!

Bio: Dexter is housetrained, neutered & has a clean bill of health! He will be 3 years old this fall and is very puppy-like in his behavior. We are limited his adoption to homes with older children because he doesn't know his own strength and could knock little children down! He was surrendered by his family because the kids didn't like it that he barked at them when they were in the pool - they found him to be scary; We think he was just excited!!

Dexter is really charming. He's handsome and sweet, inside and out.

Sun Sign: LIBRA

Quick Bio: WANNA PLAY?

Likes: treats, roaming the fenced yard, belly rubs, the couch, DINNER

Pet-Peeves: Houses without air conditioning and other dogs getting all the attention . . .

Favorite Toy: his BOWL that he carries around everywhere. SO cute.

Favorite Walk: anywhere

Best Tricks: Slam dancing with the furniture!

Motto: Ruh Roh

Boss Hog & Roscoe need families!

Name: Boss Hog!

Expected Adult Size: Boss is a BIG BOY! Probably about 80 pounds!

Arrival Story: Boss Hog arrived with his "bro" Roscoe (see below) just the other day! These two cuties were living in a garage and in the yard and were surrendered by their family who wanted better for them.

Bio: Boss Hog is 2 years old and very strong. He needs basic obedience training because he wasn't ever taught any manners, but he's smart and really wants to please!! Some of his behavior may improve after he is neutered, which we will be doing ASAP.

Name: ROSCOE!

Expected Adult Size: ROSCOE is a BIG BOY too! Probably about 80 pounds as well!

Bio: Roscoe is 2 years old and very strong but also gentle. He really wants to please and sat right by our side this morning, just looking for some love and comfort. Roscoe is smart and would benefit from basic training but he's smart and sweet, too!! He will also be neutered ASAP.

We don't know enough about Boss Hog and Roscoe yet to give you much more information, but we'll update ASAP.

Thanks for your interest!!

Brandy is available for adoption!

Nicknames: Sweetie, Lovebug, Honeybun!

Expected Adult Size: Petite for a bulldog but strong.

Arrival Story: Brandy was turned into a shelter when her parents got divorced and neither of them wanted to keep her - Brandy seems to be realizing this and is very, very sad. She perks up for treats and squeaky toys but she'd love to find herself in a forever home!

Bio: Brandy is house-trained, spayed & has a clean bill of health! She is 5-6 years old and very sweet. Right now she is scared of the other dogs in her foster home - she would do well with another quiet dog because she likes other dogs but she is very timid and we want her forever home to be the place she can relax and know that she is safe.

Sun Sign: Not sure - but she sure loves to bask in the sun!

Quick Quote: I'd like to find my forever home this time - if you'll give me a chance, I'll give you lots of unconditional love and kisses forever!

Likes:
Treats, roaming the fenced yard, sunshine.

Pet-Peeves: Dogs who try to "bully" me.

Favorite Toy: Plush squeaky toys, nylabone.

Favorite Food: Solid Gold Holistique Blendz.

Favorite Walk: Anywhere!

Best Tricks:
Looking pretty!!

Rocco 2 Will Be Adoptable Soon!

"Rocco" would probably do best in a quiet home with a single male/female or couple in a quiet home and a quiet neighborhood to reduce his excitable responses.

Potential new home should be willing to continue training and working with him to teach alternate behaviors for attention seeking and to desensitize him to objects and activities that over-stimulate him. He's best handled in a calm, quiet manner by a confident person. He responds extremely well to reinforcement via treats, and appears eager to interact to earn rewards. He lived with another bulldog who recently passed away (at 10) and Rocco is lost without her. The family brought in another bulldog but she doesn't like Rocco so it's not the bonding experience he was hoping to find. Rocco is going to require patience and commitment, but he is SO worth it!! THis boy really needs a chance. Won't you open your heart to give him a forever home?

Rocco2's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Rocco2, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

Winston - Special Needs English Bulldog

Winston is a great 2-year old dog with special needs - he has epilepsy and has a hernia that needs to be repaired - we will take care of that in rescue. His seizures are controlled with phenobarbitol and he hasn't had one since he's been on meds.

Winston loves to meet new people. He gets super excited - he does this thing where his whole body whips in half and his whole back half wags really fast (it's so cute). He loves to chew on his toys - he can do this for hours! He is a very strong chewer but most Kong Brand toys tend to hold up for him. He has a favorite red ball now. He knows it by name. He loves to be the center of attention. Winston is good with other dogs. He's very laid back and deals extremely well with different situations/places. His days are mostly spent napping on the couch snoring - he is VERY loud! He is fully house trained and crate trained. The only time he is in his crate is over night for sleeping. Winston will do best in a home where at least one person is home frequently. Winston does not know his own strength and can get very mouthy - not on purpose but when playing - for this reason he will not be placed in a home with children or with an inexperienced family. He needs someone who knows how to be alpha.

Winston's adoption will be limited to the New Jersey, Southeastern PA, Delaware and Maryland area. For information about Winston, or ANY of our adoptable dogs, please visit us at the HeaventSent Bulldog Rescue Official Website.

Senior Bulldog Needs a Home ASAP

Do you have the heart to help this gal out in her golden years? She still has plenty of love to give (and she still needs love too).

WINNIE is a beautiful senior who is down on her luck. At 9+ years of age (she'll be 10 in August), WINNIE finds herself with nowhere to live. WINNIE's parents got divorced and now she stays with her grandmother temporarily. She is in very good health except for some arthritis in her lower back/hip region which does not bother her often. She tried supplements but they upset her stomach. She also occasionally has an ear infection which the vet said is allergies.
